Packages are available in the archive since Hardy. Version 9.10 (Karmic) will start using rsyslog v4.

For installing the packages please follow the Debian instructions.

Please note that packages from the archives may be outdated. It may be well enough for your needs (but of course an install from source is recommended).

Note that Ubuntu has a file /etc/default/rsyslog which supersedes the option settings from /etc/init.d/rsyslog. A frequent task (with that version) is to add the -r option to rsyslog startup. To do so, you must edit /etc/default/rsyslog and add -r to RSYSLOGD_OPTIONS, which then looks like follows:

RSYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-m 0 -r"
